Darien was incorporated in May 1820; taken from Stamford . It is 14.9 square miles, has a population: 19,607 (2000 census), and has 6 voting districts. Darien is mainly a residential community with very little industry. It serves as a bedroom community to NYC commuters as well as being the home to workers in Stamford and Greenwich.
There are 2 MetroNorth train stations with service to Grand Central. The Darien Train Station downtown Darien, and the Noroton Heights Train Station in the Noroton section of Darien.
There are also 2 Post Offices, one in Darien and one in Noroton Heights.
Two Newspapers serve the community, The Darien News-Review and the Darien Times, both weekly.
Schools
There are 5 elementary schools - Ox Ridge, Hindley, Tokeneke, Holmes, and Hindley. Middlesex is the middle school, and Darien High the high school.
Beaches
Weed Beach and Pear Tree Beach Beach. Beach amenities include public grills, picnic areas, tennis courts, restrooms.
Town recreational facilties also include six parks, tennis courts, paddle courts, indoor ice skating rink, YMCA, YMCA, and athletic fields.
There are a multitude of Private Clubs including Wee Burn Country Club, Woodway Country Club, Country Club of Darien, Tokeneke Beach Club, Noroton Yacht Club, Ox Ridge Hunt Club, Middlesex Swimming Club.
